Whether you want to create a quiz for family fun, your class at school or your local pub, PowerPoint makes it easy, and fun. No need for scribbling questions down on scraps of paper, work your magic and PowerPoint will have you performing like Chris Tarrant, keeping your quizees on the edge of their seats. Tap into features such as animation and your quiz will quickly come to life. While the quiz is simple and fast to setup, you’ll have to think up your own questions!

Step 1

Start PowerPoint and click on the file tab. Choose the New option, then  under Available templates and themes, click on sample templates. You will see a template called Quiz Show, so double-click on it to open it up. Run the slideshow, by clicking on the icon of a projection screen of the bottom-right of the screen, to see examples of how the template has been setup. We will use the multiple choice format for our quiz, so click on Slide 7 to select it.

Step2

Click in the box where the existing question is and highlight the text that is there. Type in your question, such as, In what year was the Great fire of London? The next step is to start adding the answers. Put the correct answer (1666) in the Middle box, and then add four more incorrect answers to the other boxes.

Step3

The template is setup so that when you click the mouse, the wrong answers slowly fade out one at a time, until only the correct answer is left. By fading each one out, rather than just removing all the wrong answers, it adds to the excitement! Let’s see how the animation works. Click on the animation tab, then click on Animation Pane button. This will show a timeline of the animations, and will enable you to preview the effect, by clicking the play button.

Step 4

When you play that animation, you will notice that answer A is left as the correct answer, because this is how the template is setup. To edit this, in the animation pane, click on the top entry, and then click on the drop-down arrow and choose apply effect to slide. This will now show the animation for this slide and enable you to edit it. To remove the animation from answer C, click on the number next to the letter C, then in the animation pane, right-click the highlighted entry and choose remove.

Step 5

We now need to add the fade animation to Answer A, so highlight the text for question A, click the animations tab, and choose the Red Fade arrow, from the options. In the Animation pane, click the drop-down arrow, and choose timing. Set the start to be After Previous, and the Duration to be 1 second. Press play to test your animation. To add more multiple choice questions, right-click on the slide in the left-hand navigation window, and choose duplicate. Edit each slide in the same way as you did this one, changing the correct answer to be in a different position each time.
