Free Kindle books are out there. Some are on Amazon but you can go off-piste and there is a world of children’s literature waiting for you to download free, gratis and for nowt.
We’re not suggesting that you stop visiting the library or the bookshop. Nothing beats stumbling across a book that you’d never have searched for but free kindle books are out there and you can introduce your kid to the classics with just a few free mouse clicks.
Amazon for free kindle kids books
Go to Amazon and open up the kindle store. The menu on the left will offer you choose categories so go straight to Children’s eBooks and sort by price (low to high). Some free books are sitting there waiting for you! We had more luck going in via “fiction” and then “children’s”- There’s plenty on there but we’re not sure how much might have been misclassified, on the other hand, perhaps An Introduction to the mortuary customs of the North American Indians really is children’s fiction!?
The Kindle Freebie Tag on Amazon for free Kindle books
Here‘s our top tip for free Kindle books (for kids or anybody) – Amazon users tag any free kindle book “kindle freebie”. All you have to do is paste this URL into your browser for a library of free books to appear

You can narrow the search down to “products” and then to children’s books. It starts you off with 7,842 free books and over 100 kids books.

Project Gutenberg offers free kindle books for kids
Over 33,000 free kindle books await you at Project Gutenberg, it’s a work in progress but their children’s bookshelf is filling up slowly. The thing to remember is that lots of books from our childhood might not be classed as kids literature. For example: Mark Twain is there at Project Gutenberg but he’s not classed as a children’s author.
